Management and staff during the 2026 Half-Year Performance Review Meeting at the Hospital's Physiotherapy Centre
St. Joseph Catholic Hospital, Jirapa Holds Half-Year Performance Review Meeting
As part of the Ghana Health Service performance management calendar, health facilities are encouraged to conduct periodic performance review meetings to assess their performance, identify areas of strength and weakness, and develop strategies for improving healthcare delivery.
In line with this directive, the Management and staff of St. Joseph Catholic Hospital, Jirapa, held their 2026 Half-Year Performance Review Meeting on 22nd July 2026 at the Hospital's Physiotherapy Centre. The meeting brought together members of Management, Unit and Ward In-Charges, clinicians, and other staff to review the hospital's performance during the first half of the year.
Welcome Address by the Acting Medical Superintendent
Delivering his welcome address, the Acting Medical Superintendent, Dr. Silas Gbogere, expressed his profound appreciation to all staff for their dedication, commitment, and sacrifices throughout the first six months of the year. He commended them for their hard work despite the challenges encountered and encouraged them not to relent in the discharge of their duties but to continue serving patients diligently in Christ's Healing Ministry with professionalism, compassion, and commitment.
Dr. Gbogere noted that the year 2026 began on a difficult note due to delays in the reimbursement of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) claims. According to him, the backlog in payments affected the hospital's cash flow and resulted in shortages of essential medicines and other health commodities. He, however, expressed relief that the outstanding claims had subsequently been paid, enabling the hospital to gradually restore the availability of critical supplies and services.
Remarkable Achievements in the First Half of 2026
Despite these initial challenges, the Acting Medical Superintendent highlighted the hospital's remarkable achievements during the first half of 2026. He explained that the hospital recorded significant improvements across key service delivery indicators, findings that were also presented by the Health Information Officer during the performance review.
- OPD attendance increased by 12%, rising from 27,973 clients (H1 2025) to 30,030 (H1 2026).
- Hospital admissions increased substantially from 3,884 to 5,133 patients.
- Significant improvements in supervised deliveries, surgical procedures, and other clinical services.
Infrastructure and Equipment Investments
On infrastructure and equipment, Dr. Gbogere stated that Management had made significant investments to improve healthcare delivery. He acknowledged the successful renovation of the Female Ward and the Maternity Ward through the support of the CHAG–U.S. Embassy/FAB Integrated Health Partnership (IHP) Activity. He expressed Management's sincere appreciation for the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and the U. S. Government, noting that the renovations have significantly improved the hospital environment and enhanced the quality of care provided to patients.
He further announced the successful expansion of the hospital's Emergency Unit, which has been equipped with additional beds and modern emergency equipment to strengthen emergency care services. In addition, the hospital procured essential medical equipment, including oxygen cylinders, wheelchairs, patient monitors, suction machines, stretchers, and other critical logistics to enhance healthcare delivery, improve patient outcomes and to position the hospital as a satellite training site for the University for Business and Integrated Development School (UBIDS) Medical School.
Operational Challenges and Appeal for Support
Notwithstanding these gains, the Acting Medical Superintendent acknowledged that the hospital continues to face several operational challenges. These include a broken-down laundry machine and autoclave, an over-aged analogue X-ray machine that requires replacement, inadequate numbers of medical doctors, and insufficient staff accommodation. He therefore appealed to government, development partners, philanthropists, and other stakeholders to support the hospital in addressing these challenges to further improve healthcare delivery within the municipality and beyond.
Dr. Gbogere also expressed the hospital's profound appreciation to the Member of Parliament for the Jirapa Constituency for the generous donation of 160 bedsheets to the hospital. He described the gesture as timely and invaluable in supporting quality patient care and improving the comfort of patients admitted to the facility.
Way Forward
The review meeting concluded with discussions on departmental performances, lessons learnt during the first half of the year, and strategies aimed at sustaining the gains made and achieving even better health outcomes during the remaining months of 2026.
